The association OpenCulturas e.V.

The association OpenCulturas has been founded on February 1st, 2023. It is responsible for the free and open source software (FOSS) governance of the platform software OpenCulturas.

The major objectives are:

  • Advancement and support of arts and culture by means of free software that facilitates access to and distribution of information
  • Fostering the free and open source software OpenCulturas and its community
  • Facilitating the further development of the OpenCulturas software, its usability, accessibility, compliance, and enhancements to lower the barriers for everyone

Obiding to the principles of a non-profit organization, the association plans to:

  • Organize and coordinate the software development
  • Acqusition or facilitating of funding
  • Attending and organizing suitable events to promote FOSS in the cultural sector
  • Consulting for organizations that plan to adopt OpenCulturas

Advantages for members

As a member you can use further online tools maintained by the association, all free and open source software.

Among others:

  • A Chat system (RocketChat) with different channels, e.g. for sharing information on funding programs or coordinating common activities
  • A collaborative editor (Hedgedoc) for shared real-time editing of notes, meeting minutes, drafts - or even presentations
  • A Cloud storage (Nextcloud) for GDPR-compliant data exchange
  • A Web mailer (sogo) for shared email accounts and calendars
  • Access to Video conferences (BigBlueButton) for our online events or live discussions among working groups as well as general assemblies

Association purpose

The aims of the association are:

  • The promotion [...] of art and culture through free software that improves public access to and distribution of cultural information on the Internet
  • Commitment to the use and dissemination of the license-free open source software OpenCulturas
  • Supporting the technical development of this software to ensure low-threshold access to OpenCulturas for all people through user-friendliness, accessibility, data protection compliance, and potential improvement.

In accordance with the principles of non-profit status, these objectives are to be achieved through, among other things:

  • Organization and coordination of software development work
  • Acquisition of funding for the further development of OpenCulturas
  • Participation in and organization of events aimed at promoting the use of open source software in cultural life
  • Advice and support for institutions wishing to install and use OpenCulturas
